Gamtae seaweed for skin
Gamtae (Ecklonia cava) – one of the several edible brown algae, is commonly called the Sea trumpet. It is a perennial and abundant seaweed collected in Jeju Island, Korea. People collect the Gamtae when it is thrown to the sea shore by strong waves or a typhoon, mostly brought from the eastern coast during the spring. Also, the Haenyo – female korean divers collect sea food and dive deep into the sea to collect the Gamtae seaweed.
The importance of bioactive derivatives from Gamtae has been continuously reported. Phlorotannins,the type of tannins found in brown algae, especially in Gamtae were reported to have several biological activities, including anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory, UV protective, anti-allergic, and anti-diabeticactivities.
Dieckol, a type of phlorotannins, from Gamtae is reported to regulate the key factors of skin brightening and hair growth at the cellular level.
