Idebenone – A poweful anti-aging skincare ingredient you should know about

What is Idebenone?

Idebenone has long been known in the pharmaceutical field but only recently became known in the skin care field. Idebenone is an antioxidant and helps neutralize certain types of free radicals, which helps reduce blood flow as it protects cells from free radical damage. It is a fine orange antioxidant powder that was originally used medically during organ transplants as it prevents their oxidation.

Idebenone chemical formula

Antioxidants work by reducing the imbalance of free radicals in the skin. Free radicals are molecules that damage the skin, collagen, and reduce elasticity. Free radicals are produced during a process called oxidative stress, a natural process in the body that occurs when the skin is exposed to UV rays, pollution, and other environmental factors.  An imbalance in the level of free radicals in the body is often associated with aging.

Idebenone is designed to reduce the effects of free radicals on the skin.

Idebenone benefits for skin

Anti-aging

It was first used medically but was later found, through topical use, to protect skin cells from environmental damage. This is due to its potent antioxidant behaviour that can improve skin’s appearance – from diminishing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, to reducing dryness, and improving skin texture. Idebenone antioxidant properties are outstanding, which means it is great at fighting free radicals and other environment stresses. This is the same property that helps it get rid of wrinkles as well.

Idebenone powder

In terms of benefits, Idebenone seems to produce the same antioxidant effects as Coenzyme Q10, with the only difference being that it has lower water solubility and slightly higher affinity for lipids.

Good for sensitive skin

Idebenone, through its antioxidant action, is likely to help reduce irritation and soothe the appearance of redness as it may help to reduce the stress load on the skin. This is why Idebenone can also be found in many formulations for sensitive skin types.

Protection

The benefits of using Idebenone in particular are that it’s more phyto-protective, so it protects against damage from smoke and different toxic avengers that we encounter on a daily basis. The skin appears much healthier-looking and smoother with less hyperpigmentation, photo damage, wrinkles, and fine lines.

When the protective properties of Idebenone were compared to five leading antioxidants against environmental damage, it was found that Idebenone was proven as a super powerful antioxidant with an EPF rating of 95 out of 100.

Which products contain Idebenone?

Researchers found out that a great way to transfer the Idebenone into the skin was through a cream with oils in it. Oil carries the Idebenone deep into the skin for faster results. While doing this it helps give you more vibrant skin.

Idebenone face creams are easy to find, but finding one with various beneficial herb oils and extracts in it as well can be a chore, until Incellderm developed its Active Cream. It also uses vitamin C to help repair skin and make it more healthy.

Overall Idebenone has been proven to help smooth, firm and tighten skin around the eyes and facial area. It is great for rebuilding skin that has been damaged by the sun or other external elements, and best of all it is an excellent moisturizer. Incellderm Active Cream contains 2% Idebenone.

Is Idebenone Safe?

As Idebenone hasn’t been used in skincare formulations for a long time, it is not a particularly well-researched ingredient. It is generally considered to be safe for use. Few people have experienced redness, irritation, and stinging when used as an Idebenone-based product; however, this reaction is rare. If you’re considering the use of this product and have sensitive skin, you may want to test a small patch of skin first. It is also crucial to note that Idebenone, like any antioxidant, will reduce in effectiveness over time when exposed to UV rays. To avoid this, make sure to keep your product away from direct sunlight and ensure you use a sunscreen when you are likely to be in the sun.
